Airtel Money (formerly known as Zain Zap) is a mobile payments service that has been deployed by Airtel group (formerly called Zain in Africa) across a number of their African operating companies, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Niger, Ghana and Sierra Leone. Airtel developed its m-wallet technology platform in-house, its SIM solution is provided by Oberthur, and the operator works with a specific bank partner(s) in each country in which the service is implemented. In 2010, GSMA made a grant to Airtel to deploy an East African mobile-to-mobile international remittance product.
